As with all grinders it’s important to follow certain precautions to ensure the health and safety of the operator and those in the nearby vicinity. Given that the most powerful angle grinders and bench grinders are corded it’s important to be aware of a couple of important safety tips specifically around electrical safety.

In this post, we’ll look at some of the simple things you can do to ensure you’re working in a safe manner when using powerful corded grinders.

We also have another article about more general safety tips when using an angle grinder.

1. Make sure your home is fitted with circuit breakers or fuses

Circuit breakers or fuses are important safety features that safeguard an electrical circuit by preventing them from overheating, melting, and causing fires. When the current on a particular circuit exceeds a predetermined threshold, the circuit breaker will trip (Or a fuse with a blow) which shuts off electricity to that circuit. Thereby preventing it from overheating and potentially causing a fire.

Before using any high-powered corded grinders or any high-powered electrical device it’s important to ensure that your home’s circuit breakers or fuses are in working order.

2. Make sure your home is fitted with a safety switch

Many people mistakenly confuse safety switches with circuit breakers. Circuit breakers protect electrical circuits from overheating and melting, which often results in house fires. Safety switches on the other hand are designed to protect occupants of the home from electric shocks and electrocution.

Safety switches work by cutting off electricity to a particular circuit as soon as a leakage is detected. This ensures that if an electrical fault were to occur whilst using an angle grinder it protects you from a nasty or potentially fatal electric shock.

Seeing as though you’ll be holding an angle grinder whilst using it and the ever-present risk of accidentally cutting the power cord whilst operating the grinder, you’ll want to ensure that your home is fitting with a safety switch.

In fact, ensuring your home is fitted with a safety switch is good practice whether you use corded power tools or not. If you notice your home is not fitted with a safety switch, then it’s best to contact a licensed electrician to install these devices.

3. Ensure you’re using the right extension cord

Sometimes you need to use your angle grinder outside, or you want to perform cuts or grinding work outside for better ventilation. Under such circumstances using an extension cord is a must. However, few DIYers stop to check that their extension cords are rated appropriately for the angle grinder or power tool being used.

If extension cords are not suitably rated to the electrical load required to operate the grinder, they can become highly hazardous. Overloading the cord frequently results in overheating. Overheating can occur at the socket, plug, or wires, resulting in the cord melting, which can result in fire.

To prevent this from happening first identify the watt rating of your angle grinder. This should be imprinted somewhere on the grinder. You can also check the owner’s manual of your angle grinder, which should stipulate the watt rating of the power tool.

Once you know your equipment’s watt or power rating, you’ll need to make sure the watt rating of the extension cord is rated to a higher rating than the angle grinder.

4. Ensure you’re using the right power board

Many DIYer’s workshops incorporate multiple stationary power tools, such as bench grinders plugged into power boards. Just like extension cords, the power boards watt rating should be higher than the power tools connected to the power board.

Also, make sure the power board you use has overload protection. This little device causes the power board to switch off if the electrical loads become too much for the power board to handle. This nifty little safety feature prevents overheating and melting of chords, wires, and sockets.

5. Do not use multiple power tools simultaneously

Trying to run multiple high-powered corded power tools simultaneously can cause electrical circuits to overheat. If your home is fitted with fuses or circuit breakers, you’ll notice that they trip if you run multiple power tools at the same time. To prevent this from occurring and to reduce the electrical load on your home’s circuits limit the number of corded power tools you use to just one at a time.

6. Check the power cord before using your grinder

Perform a visual assessment of the tools before using them to ensure that they are in proper operating order. It is essential to check the cords for any problems.

Do a visual inspection of the power cable for cracks, fraying, and other symptoms of wear and any problems with the insulation of the cord.

If your power tools are stored away and not used very often, or are stored in a garage, the cords may have been exposed to rodents that chew through the cord, or a leaking ceiling leading to moisture affecting your power tools and cords. It is always a good idea to visually inspect the equipment before you use it, test it first in a controlled environment, wear your PPE and be aware of your working environment at all times, especially if you are working with other people.

Stay safe when using corded grinders

Angle grinders and bench grinders are a versatile and important tool for the DIYer to have in their arsenal of power tools. As with all electrical equipment, it’s important to follow certain safety protocols to ensure the health and safety of the operator, and those around them.

Following the simple tips above will help minimise the likelihood of any electrical faults causing damage to your property, your equipment, or harm to you and the occupants of your home or workplace. If in doubt, it’s best to consult professional advice from a licensed electrician.

The key variations between a bench grinder and an angle grinder are found in individual properties like size, weight, and speed.

Choosing the right grinder for the job to deliver the right results can be confusing. Or is it? A bench grinder, just like its counterpart, is a useful tool for grinding purposes. Despite their differences, these power tools have similar attributes and usages.

This guide will examine the key differences between an angle grinder and the bench grinder. So continue reading;

We are going to look at:

Properties and key differences

Pros and cons of a bench grinder

Pros and cons of an angle grinder

Which one should you use

Final words

Bench Grinder vs. Angle Grinder

When handling a large project, it’s easier to conceal blunders and harder to ruin the entire work. However, a small job like a DIY requires precise work around less material.

Therefore, the size and precision of the job will significantly determine the type of grinder to use. Here are the key differences.

#1. Function

Each grinder is for a specific purpose, but they all have a similar function – grinding. However, the tools can be used in different operations.

Bench grinders will sharpen any dull blades, and smooth the edges of objects, resize and refurbish any rusted parts of a metal. You can also use the tool to horn and shape or remove burrs in casting.

On the other hand, an angle grinder is a versatile tool in your kit that allows you to grind and cut excess material in a workpiece. It’s also used for polishing material, making it an excellent choice in metalwork and woodwork.

#2. Grinding Wheels

The type of grinder wheel determines which job is most suitable with a bench grinder. The tool includes two wheels with one wheel treated with coarse grit and the other with a finer grit. You can add different wheels to the grinder to increase versatility.

The different types of bench grinder wheels include; coarse grinding, buffing, wire brush, and fine grit. The tool is handy for shaping, honing, and buffing.

The wheels are often fragile, and it’s advisable to place the bench grinder in a quiet corner of the workshop. You can avoid costly replacements from accidental damage.

Similarly, angle grinders are multipurpose tools that allow individual wheel usage at a time. For instance, you can put a sanding disc and use it as a sander. It’s best used for polishing and cutting with an abrasive disc.

#3. Wheel Speed

The wheel speed is the main factor that determines the difference between bench grinders and angle grinders.

An angle grinder comes with a universal motor with wheels that run at high RPM ratings of 8000 to 12000 RPM.

Also, it can drive small grinding discs to profile material. It’s best for coarse work like carving steel and polishing jagged edges and jobs where there’s some room to operate.

On the other hand, bench grinders include an induction motor and runs at a much lower speed, around 3000 to 3500 RPM. It’s intended to drive relatively large abrasive disks for intense molding of metal.

It’s also a handy tool for fine works like burnishing handles, sharpening a chisel, plane irons, and axes. Caution should be taken when operating the tools by not exceeding the maximum operating speeds to prevent the risk of injury to the operator.

#4. Design

The tools come in different designs. Angle grinders are smaller than bench grinders and can fit in your hand, providing a great deal of mobility.

Angle grinders include an ergonomic handle and firm grip that makes it easy to maneuver a workpiece and gives it support to minimize vibrations. Make sure the grip is comfortable and easy to handle.

Conversely, bench grinders include a bench-top type design with a base that allows it to sit on a worktop to reduce vibrations when working. It comes in the size of a shoebox and available either as a 6 inch bench grinder or 8-inch bench grinder model. Make sure you get the size that works best with the project you have in mind.

Therefore, unlike angle grinders, which include a handheld option, bench grinders don’t offer flexibility.

#5. Weight

Angle grinders weigh significantly less than bench grinders, which make them easy to carry. They also come with one wheel, which weighs between 7-8 pounds, making it lightweight.

On the other hand, a bench grinder includes a cast-iron base, which is a heavy metal. The extra weight allows this power tool to handle a lot of pressure to hone even the most challenging materials, thanks to a stable support.

#6. Users

Bench grinders and angle grinders require skilled utilization to avoid the risk of injury.

A bench grinder is a powerful tool commonly used in workshops. It works well when it’s rounded to some extent, with an elevated point in the middle. So, get a flat diamond dresser and fashion the edges for a smooth, gentle curve.

Conversely, an angle grinder can perform a range of tasks but chiefly limited by the attachments you buy for it. Although they aren’t overly powerful tools, you can cut steel rebar and other large projects with the right attachment.

Thus, angle grinders are commonly used in DIY projects to polish tools, remove rust and grit. You’ll need to use both hands to keep them under control, and most come with a second handle to remind you.

#7. Portability

Bench grinders come with two wheels and a bulky cast iron base giving them little mobility and challenging when maneuvering but useful in a workshop. Thus, the tool stands in a fixed place when cutting, sharpening, or polishing material.

On the other hand, angle grinders are lightweight, handheld machines that a user can move from one workplace to another. The device is easy to use and an excellent choice for beginners and DIYers.

It’s also comfortable to maneuver, especially if you want to work on hard-to-reach spots and material that requires finesse.

The Pros and Cons of a Bench Grinder

Depending on the type of grinder you choose to use, you can sharpen, shape, polish, or clean almost any material type.

A bench grinder is a versatile tool for sharpening dull tools, modifying parts, and refurbishing old rusted equipment.

Here is a list of bench grinders’ pros and cons that will allow you to see the differences between the bench and angle grinders.

Cons

Not portable

Not for armatures

The Pros and Cons of an Angle Grinder

Angle grinders can rapidly carve large pieces of stock without wasting time. They can also level joints and smooth out rough surfaces on metal workpieces.

Here are the pros and cons that will help shed more light on the differences in power and operation between the two machines.

Pros

Portable

Powerful motor for high speed

Gets into tight space

Not difficult to use

Comfortable grip

Cons

Sometimes it can overheat when running at high speed.

May not always be available with additional wheels

Which One Should You Use? A Bench Grinder or an Angle Grinder?

The main purpose of angle grinders in a workshop is to clean metal workpieces. They can also cut and remove excess material on metallic and non-metallic items.

For instance, they can remove paint on metal for a polished look without damaging the surface.

Additionally, unlike bench grinders, which cannot polish aluminum workpieces, angle grinders are extremely effective in cleaning aluminum. They are also portable and easy to maneuver.

Conversely, when it comes to grinding metal to get clean, sharp edges, nothing beats the bench grinder. Bench grinders offer the option of using different wheels. Each task demands use the of a different disc.

With the right powerful flap disc suitable for the job, you can restore the edges of tools and maintain their usefulness. Bench grinders also provide stability when shaping and honing large metal items.

What gives bench grinders an edge over angle grinders is the bigger motor and more grinding power. However, you lose out on portability.

Final Words

To wrap up, as we have seen, both bench grinders and angle grinders have contrasting properties and uses.

Many differences should not be overlooked when working with these power tools—for instance, motor power, speed ratings, mobility, disc size, and more. However, the type of grinder you choose should match your needs.

A bench grinder may not be the fanciest tool in the shed, but it elevates your toolset, making it a must have equipment in your workshop. But if you’re working with a rough surface, get an angle grinder to smooth out the surface.

If you’re thinking of adding a grinder to your tool kit, this guide will help you make the right decision.

We hope this useful information will save you valuable time deciding between a bench grinder and an angle grinder. Please give a view and leave us a comment below. Cheers!

There are various tools that one can use to cut wood, but if you have an angle grinder and you’re wondering if you can use it to cut wood then the answer is YES.

You can definitely use angle grinders to cut wood, however, the kickback tends to be very fierce, and the blade can get trapped in the wood – which can be very scary…right?

However, it’s a sort of unsafe trick that you’ll have to learn.

If you need to cut wood with an angle grinder, you’ll need the right cutting disc to match your tool. The blade should be specifically for wood cutting if you want to get through wood material with precision and accuracy.

It would also help if you employed the right techniques when cutting to keep yourself safe and minimize the risk of injuries. So continue reading…

Why Use An Angle Grinder To Cut Wood?

Grinders are generally used to cut metal in masonry. An angle grinder is a powerful tool for various metal fabrication works like cutting, grinding, finishing, and polishing.

It takes enough experience to make a detailed cut when making a carved armrest for a bar or a round rod from square stock. Therefore, if you’re looking into carving logs with preciseness, it may be a good idea to use an angle grinder, but it’s not a toy in the least bit.

A grinder also makes an excellent choice when making odd shapes of wood, such as concave surfaces, convex, round notches, and soft curved edges. You can use the grinder for the course work and smooth out the surface with other tools.

Unless you’re making small cutoffs, an angle grinder is not meant to cut wood material as it burns your way through the wood and can ruin your discs.

However, if the grinder uses a smaller diameter blade for woodwork, you will cut through the wood, but it won’t provide the same depth of cut as it would with a circular saw.

Choosing the Right Blade to Cut Wood

The combination of an angle grinder power and a three teeth speed cutter saw blade makes cutting wood material an effortless job. It also offers the right balance between safety and functionality.

Although it’s not an abrasive blade typical in grinders, three teeth speed cutting blades feel comfortable to use, ensures safe work, and creates an acceptable radial resistance value at a high rotation speed.

The blade features three teeth to cut through the material. Now, you might think this is a bad thing, mainly if you’re used to seeing circular blade saws, but this is what will make your grinder a versatile tool for woodwork.

The three teeth blade reduces the possibility of a kickback.

There are many types of blades for woodwork that you will find in the market. For instance, T Tovia 3 Woodcarving Saw Blade and Graff Grinder Wood Carving Disc make an ideal choice for cutting and shaping wood material.

The discs are designed for cutting, sculpting, and shaping. Now, let’s get to the process of cutting wood with an angle grinder.

Can Angle Grinders Cut Wood? Tips and Tricks

A speed cutter disc is specifically designed for cutting wood. The blade features three large tungsten carbide teeth in a slightly odd wheel shape, a unique anti-kickback design to handle the stress of woodcutting with an angle grinder.

On the other hand, angle grinders feature a powerful no-load speed motor of 11,000 – 12,000 RPM for precise cuts on demanding projects compared to a circular saw that features a no-load speed of 5,000 RPM.

The spin rotation makes them too fast and presents a considerable risk of injury when cutting wood material.

Conversely, unlike circular saws, which include a sole plate and other safety features to create a stable surface to cut on, angle grinders are completely freehand, which presents a problem when cutting wood as you must direct it at the cut line with your hand.

Remember, this is a dangerous tool that you should never work with without supervision if you’re uncomfortable, and should only be used by professional.

When working with an angle grinder to cut wood, you are working at your own risk! Besides, if it’s something that you don’t need to use often, you’re better off with the proper tool for the job.

Here are three tips and tricks to follow when cutting wood with an angle grinder:

#1 Install a Speed Cutter Disc in Your Grinder

Grinders have a half guard like a fender, which must be directed down to protect your fingers. But, it would be best if you angled it up enough so that you can allow the blade to sink in the material so that you can have a comfortable position.

Always unplug the tool from the source of power when changing blades

Rotate the tool by depressing a little catch behind the guard to get the set where you want

Install your blade and point the teeth in the direction that the tool spins – clockwise direction

Confirm by checking on the little arrow on the grinder that indicates spin orientation and also on the blade

Ensure they point in the same direction so that the teeth are engaging head-on

Ensure the blade is securely tightened

#2 Set the Correct Speed

Most angle grinders run at a speed of 11,000 – 12,000 RPM. The speed rate is too fast, especially when handling wood material.

Therefore, exercise extreme caution when working with an angle grinder. The tool should not exceed the recommended RPM when cutting through the material.

#3 Cut the Wood

When cutting wood, always make a cut line to give you something to follow. Hold the angle grinder tool with both hands in front of you and release the trigger when changing positions.

You can use the blade guard for stability or as a pivot and set the bottom edge on the wood you want to cut. Slowly, rotate the blade down into the stock and cut.

It’s important to note that angle grinders cut when the blade teeth spin down towards the floor rather than the ceiling. It also makes it easy to cut out when you start at the far end of the piece and draw it back towards you.

However, the process is not very easy, and you may end up with a rough edge. Besides, the blade doesn’t cut that deeply because it’s not that big, so if you have a thick stock, your disc might not get it all at once.

Even if the blades aren’t as clean as circular saws, angle grinders shine with wood carving and grinding. Since the teeth stick out of the disc’s surface, they offer an excellent angle for smooth grooving and rabbet cutting.

Hold the blade flat and with both hands and with the leading edge trim away and lightly gouge the piece as you reveal new layers. The blade goes through the material like butter.

If you’re looking for more carving capacity it can work wonders with a wood cutting bit in a grinder. It takes away material in a smooth, delicate touch. Also, with a lot of careful control, you can create grooves of various depths.

Angle grinders can cut wood, and having the right blade handy can be useful for cutting, carving and grinding plywood, chipboard, hardboard, and a variety of other materials.

Personal Protection When Using an Angle Grinder to Cut Wood

Angle grinders lack safety features you’d find in a circular saw. Here are some personal protection tips to remember when working with this little but powerful tool.

If you want to use an angle grinder to cut wood, you need to prepare your workstation

Always hold the tool out away from you when you turn it on or handle it live. The grinder’s exposed blade doesn’t have any spring-loaded blade guard and can present a potential hazard to the user

Since your hands can get flayed from flying debris, make sure to use work gloves when making cuts

Don’t remove the guard. Work in a way that the dust is thrown more towards you than away from you to prevent kickback

Keep your eyes safe and use safety glasses and a full face shield.

Work in a properly ventilated area

Hold the tool with both hands whenever you’re working.

Pay close attention to the cutting disc’s expiry date, which is stamped on the inner metal ring

For the safest operation, use an angle grinder with the “dead man switch” which switches off the tool in the case of a rare event like a wheel breakage.

Ensure that the switch is always on whenever you use the tool to minimize the risk of injury.

Final Words

With the right blade, an angle grinder can be a robust blade for cutting all your woodwork, including carving away large sections with ease.

The disc is much quicker than a chisel, and any sculptor would appreciate the speed they can cut through the material.

If you’re still wondering – can angle grinders cut wood? With the right cutting disc, to match your tool, you’ll cut through a range of materials with speed and precision.

The main differences between a die grinder and angle grinder are seen in the tool design, power and their sizes. When it comes to usage, an angle grinder is more suited towards rough grinding, whereas a die grinder comes as a rotary tool tailored for precision fabrication.

There is no distinct winner in the die grinder vs angle grinder comparison, considering both tools have unique applications. However, if you are looking to pick one of them, we have included below some of the top distinctions you should be aware of.

The Die Grinder

Die grinders are small handheld power tools designed to suit various applications. The rotating shaft accommodates different attachments, which can be used to cut through metals, wood and other materials.

Besides cutting through surfaces, die grinders can also be used to polish, smoothen rough edges of cut metal or wood, blade sharpening, rust removal and many more. With its impressive list of possible attachments, the die grinder is one of the most versatile tools in any metal fabrication workshop.

However, not all offers are ideal and there are various distinctions to review before picking the right die grinder that suits your needs.

The Angle Grinder

Much like a die grinder, an angle grinder is a handheld power tool primarily designed to grind away the rough edges of metal, wood, or concrete.

Angle grinders can work with different attachments and grindstones to suit various applications that range from cutting through surfaces to polishing, grinding away rust, sharpening and shaping.

An angle grinder is much bigger than a die grinder and has a more powerful motor, making it ideal for cutting thick metals. Because of their versatility, there are many options in the market, so you should prioritize finding specs that fit your needs.

Top 5 Differences Between Angle Grinders and Die Grinders

#1 Design

Angle grinders feature slim abrasive discs mounted on the rotary spindle. The disks, or grindstones, are at the right angle with the tooling and use two main parts for fabrication.

The disc’s face is often used for polishing, sanding and grinding, usually accomplished at low rpm. The periphery performs the work of cutting when rotating at high speed.

Die grinders are rotary tools that cut material in small bits. Most die grinders use carbide burrs for the peripheral area used for machining. You can find straight and right-angled die grinders, so it is essential to understand the difference before making a choice.

You will also find various design differences depending on the application and material you are working on. An angle grinder is considered a heavy-duty power tool while a die grinder is a lightweight rotary tool.

#2 Size

While both angle grinders and die grinders are handheld tools, they have significant distinction when it comes to size. Die grinders are generally small and designed to be used with a single hand. The design is more like a screwdriver, making it ideal for precision cutting. Die grinders work almost similar to the cut off tool, but the two have considerable differences.

The latter has limited applications considering it is a fixed tool that doesn’t accommodate other attachments. Angle grinders, on the other hand, tend to be much bigger than most handheld power tools. They come in varying sizes from small models you can lift using one hand to larger designs with considerable weight.

Angle grinders also feature handles on the design to help you grip on the tool. They are bulkier and feature bigger motors, wheel protectors and grindstones. This doesn’t take anything away from their functionality, considering they are designed for heavy-duty fabrications.

#3 Speed and Power

Angle grinders are generally bigger and feature a larger motor that is more powerful than what you will get on a die grinder. They are built for heavy-duty machining and come with varying power ratings from 2 to 5 horsepower, almost double what is produced by die grinders.

The power surplus is handy when working thicker or harder materials. It can also speed the process, allowing you to grind and polish much faster. Die grinders are air-powered, although most also use a battery. Corded electric-powered die grinders are not quite popular.

On the other hand, electric powered and battery-powered angle grinders are all you will get in the market. Angle grinders also offer lower rpm compared to die grinders.

Nonetheless, these tools have few overlapping applications, so the rpm shouldn’t be an issue in the die grinder vs angle grinder comparison. You only need to worry about rpm, once you determine the required grinder.

#4 Tooling Precision

If you are looking for better precision, you should get a die grinder. They are designed to offer better maneuverability, so you will have total control over the process. The small motors also offer controlled force you can use to work more complex profiles.

An angle grinder uses brutal force and power to accomplish its function. It is designed for quick grinding, polishing and cutting. While you can achieve clean cuts, it won’t be as fine and polished as using a die grinder.

Angle grinders do a perfect job of grinding rough edges and cutting thick material. The grinding disk features a flat face that can work flat surfaces and curved exterior that spans a large surface, but that’s as far as recommended.

Conversely, die grinders are smaller in size and can be used to shape curves, polish holes, sharpen hard-to-reach tool blades and work complex internal profiles. Angle grinders are still precise in their application, which is to grind away large surfaces fast.

#5 Versatility

Both angle grinders and die grinders are very versatile as you can use different attachments.

The main difference is angle grinders are bigger and more powerful suited to heavier tasks, whereas die grinders are smaller and precise to facilitate lightweight fabrications.

Angle grinders feature protective guard, which makes them safer as a cut off tool, especially when dealing with hard metal, like steel.

Die grinders don’t perform well as a cut off tool and lack the protective shield, enough reason you shouldn’t use them for direct cut offs.

You can still find cut off wheels for die grinders if you want to cut small, thin metals. Both grinders can grind away rust, paint and rough edges of cut metal or wood. You can also use the grindstones for buffing and polishing, sharpening metal objects and shaping.

Die grinders can even be used to add intricate design details as they are smaller in size. Angle grinders occupy a much larger space and their big disks suit applications that require cutting through metal objects swiftly.

Which One Should I Get? An Angle Grinder or a Die Grinder?

Since these two tools are designed to perform different tasks, you should get the one that suits your projects needs. However, I personally consider that getting the two of them is always a smart choice.

Primarily, angle grinders are designed to cut and grind metal and wood materials. They can also work with concrete surfaces and people have found various other applications you can achieve using different attachments.

Generally speaking, you should get an angle grinder for the following reasons:

When in need of a powerful handheld tool for rough grinding and cutting;

When you need to cut, grind or polish hard surfaces, such as steel frames and rebar;

When you need to grind away or remove hard material such as mortar and tile;

When you are working with a large surface; and

Rust removal from a wide area

On the other hand, die grinders are a leap ahead when it comes to what you can achieve. They are highly versatile and accommodate more attachments than a standard angle grinder. All you need is the right attachments compatible with the grinder.

If you are dealing with small metals and thinner pieces, you will probably find the die grinder invaluable for your workshop. It is recommendable if:

You are involved with precision jobs

You mostly work with small workpieces

You need smaller tool bits to cut, grind or polish metal objects

You are into DIY woodwork and metalwork

People have found various uses for both angle grinders and die grinders, so the applications aren’t limited to those listed above. The tools also come in varying sizes and specifications to suit specific applications. As such, it is essential to find the right model for your task.

You should also avoid using the wrong tool to prevent accidents and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions.

Final Words

You can find other minor differences that exist between these two conventional handheld grinders. Both cutting tools have a unique application and one may not be exchanged for another, except in very rare instances. They also come with different specifications and recommended uses. As such, you should choose a model that meets your applications.

Once you determine your workshop needs, find reputable retailers that can guarantee genuine top-rated grinders in the market. That said, both die grinders and angle grinders are useful and worth having in your workshop.

Primarily, angle grinders are powerful and used to cut and shape metal surfaces, whereas cut off tools are used to cut thin metals.

When it comes to operating the two tools, a cut off tool is operated using one hand and designed for cutting metal surfaces while an angle grinder requires both hands and has versatile applications.

Read our grinder buyer’s guide to know all the crucial factors you should consider when purchasing one.

What Is An Angle Grinder?

Metal fabrication requires precision and ultimate attention. With so many tooling options available, your choice will depend on the project you are working on.

Technically, thick, tough metal will require more powerful cutters and an angle grinder can provide the power you seek for such projects. Angle grinders are designed to grind and sharpen.

They can also be used to cut metal and accommodate various fittings that expand its functionality and possibilities when fabricating metals. Angle grinders can also make deep incisions, making them useful in design and artwork.

Most angle grinders have motors with 3-7 horsepower, so they can cut thicker metals than cut-off tools. Some masons also use them to cut bricks, in which they are very effective. The grinder head is placed at adjustable angles to allow precision when making angled cuts.

To use an angle grinder, both hands must get a hold on the tool, which has proven the ideal option for working long thick metal fast.

There are several brands available in the market, each with unique features and benefits, so we recommend comparing the best angle grinder and cut off tool models before making a purchase.

What Is A Cut Off Tool?

Most cut off tools feature one horsepower motors ideal for working light metals. However, there are several versions of these power tools, including corded and cordless.

Unlike angle grinders, on a cut off tool, the cutting head is mounted perpendicularly on the driveshaft and can be operated using one hand.

Because of their design, cut off tools suit projects that require precise flushing and efficiency in the cutting process. They also have a smaller size ideal for cutting car bodies and other hard-to-reach areas.

The blade on a cut off tool is designed to cut rather small metals and their small size suits lightweight projects. They are common for the solo fabrication of light metal sheets and precision cutting.

A cut off tool is also quite versatile and you can use it to create intricate details since you only need one hand to operate. The fixed design also allows precise results, which is essential in metal fabrication, especially in one-handed operations.

However, choosing a cut off tool or angle grinder requires reviewing all aspects, including positioning, power range and rating, safety features and more.

Angle Grinder Vs Cut Off Tool Main Differences

The main differences between angle grinders and cut off tools can be highlighted under the following key areas:

#Power

An angle grinder is much more powerful than a cut off tool. Most angle grinders have a power rating of 3 to 7 horsepower, which is great for cutting thicker metals.

Cut off tools, on the other hand, are smaller and provide up to 1 horsepower, restricting them to light metals. However, you can find varying power ranges for both models.

#Mode Of Operation

Angle grinders are designed for two-handed operation. This affects how you place the fabrication metal and cutting procedure, which is different from the one-handed operation used for cut off tools.

There are different sizes for both angle grinders and cut off tools. However, the latter is always smaller and designed to operate with one hand.

#Application

A cut off tool is primarily designed to cut thin metal in lightweight projects. An angle grinder, on the other hand, is more versatile and can be used to grind, sharpen, polish, trim and cut metal surfaces. An angle grinder also works thicker metals and has more power for heavier tasks.

Several differences can be drawn on these aspects alone, including mechanical, electrical, functionality and even price.

As such, you should focus on finding the right feature set and specifications for your application, once you determine which tool is needed.

Angle Grinder Vs Cut Off Tool Similarities

Although angle grinders and cut off tools are two different categories of power tools, there are some similarities between the two. Here’s an overview at the most obvious ones:

An angle grinder is one of the most versatile power tools you will come across. Its uses overlap beyond metal fabrication, which cannot be said of cut off tools.

The increased power also makes grinders useful when working with tougher materials. The obvious use for an angle grinder is grinding and polishing metal surfaces.

However, these designs allow you to swap the head, so you can use the same grinder for various other applications.

The common examples include grinding metal, steel and rough edges of the cut tile, pavers and stucco. Other include sanding, polishing, sharpening, routing out mortar, cutting tile, removing loose paint and rust and many others. Grinders can even sharpen your steel blades.

This extends the functionality of angle grinders to fabricate materials other than metals.

The main downside of using angle grinders is their significantly larger size. The tool requires both hands to operate and feature wide cutting plates that won’t work for small or cramped spaces. The tool also isn’t ideal for detailing.

Cutt Off Tool Uses

Because of their small size, cut off tools can be operated using one hand and are suitable for cutting rather small pieces of metal or other recommended surfaces.

If you don’t have large metal pieces to cut through, a cut off tool can replace the angle grinder.

However, this tool is provided for making incisions and cutting thin metal. It cannot be used to sharpen, grind, or polish any surface.

Cut off tools are best left to cutting small metals, where they cut up to 6 inches from top to bottom. You can also use them for details, thanks to their small size that reaches tight spaces to make incisions. However, the blades are fixed, limiting the surfaces you can fabricate.

The main disadvantage of cut off tools is their fixed design. There is no way to replace the cutting head, so you are limited to cutting specific metals.

Cut off tools are also designed for lighter tasks and thin metals.

Which One Should I Get? An Angle Grinder or A Cut Off Tool?

There is no single winner for angle grinder vs cut off tool, considering both are designed for unique applications.

If anything, it is ideal to have both, so you can pick the right one when its need arises. Essentially, the project will determine what tool you need, which makes it important to understand your needs. Some of the things to consider include:

#Main Functionality

Heavy projects that involve thick wide metals will call for angle grinding, while lightweight cutting for small metals can be accomplished using a cut off tool.

Grinders can also sand, polish, sharpen and make incisions. As such, you should note down the primary functionality you seek to help you identify the fitting tool.

#Performance Rating

Power tools have different performance ratings, so you will find differences for both angle grinders and cut off tools. The priority is to choose a tool befitting your project’s needs. You can check the power rating (horsepower) to determine what tools will meet your cutting needs.

#Safety Features

You should invest in power tools that have the right safety features and always wear protective gear when cutting and fabricating metals using a grinder.
